YAG Laser Capsulotomy
Laser treatment for clouding after cataract surgery
Overview
YAG laser capsulotomy treats posterior capsule opacification, the clouding of the lens capsule that can follow cataract surgery. A neodymium doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser is focused through the pupil to create a small opening in the cloudy capsule behind the lens implant, restoring a clear path for light. It is performed in an outpatient clinic, takes only minutes, and involves no incisions. Vision often improves within a day. Possible complications include a temporary rise in eye pressure, new floaters, and rarely retinal detachment or damage to the lens implant.
