FAQ

Which eye symptoms are treated as emergencies?

Eye care guidance generally classifies sudden vision loss, a curtain or shadow across vision, a sudden shower of new floaters or flashes, chemical splashes, penetrating injuries, severe eye pain with redness, halos around lights with headache and nausea, and new double vision as urgent, because they can signal conditions such as retinal detachment, acute angle closure glaucoma, giant cell arteritis, or stroke.

Do carrots actually help eyes?

Carrots provide beta carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A, a component of the visual pigment rhodopsin. Vitamin A deficiency causes night blindness, but in well nourished people extra carrots do not improve vision. The idea that carrots sharpen night vision was popularized in Britain during the Second World War, reportedly in part to conceal the use of airborne radar.

Can reading in dim light damage eyes?

There is no evidence that reading in dim light causes permanent damage. It can cause temporary fatigue and discomfort because contrast is reduced and the eyes work harder to focus. The same applies to sitting close to a television, a long standing piece of folklore.

What is known about the long term results of LASIK?

LASIK has been performed since the early 1990s, and long term studies report generally stable results in appropriately selected patients. Dry eye and night vision symptoms such as glare and halos are the most common side effects and often lessen over months, though some persist. Corneal ectasia is a rare serious complication, and preoperative screening of corneal shape and thickness aims to identify eyes at risk. Satisfaction in published patient surveys is generally high.

What is legal blindness?

In the United States, legal blindness is defined as best corrected vision of 20/200 or worse in the better eye, or a visual field limited to 20 degrees or less. Other countries use similar thresholds. Most people who meet the definition are not in total darkness and retain some usable vision, which low vision rehabilitation aims to make the most of.

Do blue light glasses work?

Systematic reviews of clinical trials have not found that blue light filtering lenses meaningfully reduce eye strain from screens. Screen related discomfort is attributed mainly to reduced blinking and sustained near focus. Blue light does influence the circadian rhythm, so the effect of evening light exposure on sleep is a separate area of research.
