Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty
A laser treatment that improves drainage of fluid from the eye
Overview
Selective laser trabeculoplasty, SLT, is a laser procedure used to lower eye pressure in open angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. Short pulses of low energy laser are applied to the trabecular meshwork, the drainage tissue of the eye, selectively targeting pigmented cells and triggering biological changes that improve fluid outflow, without visible burns. It is performed in the clinic in a few minutes. The UK LiGHT trial found SLT to be an effective first line alternative to eye drops for many patients. The effect can wear off over years, and the procedure can be repeated.
