Ocular Rosacea
Eye and eyelid involvement in rosacea
Overview
Ocular rosacea is the eye manifestation of rosacea, a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes facial flushing and redness. In the eye it commonly causes burning, grittiness, dryness, red and swollen eyelid margins, dysfunction of the meibomian oil glands, and recurrent styes or chalazia. Eye symptoms can appear before, after, or without obvious skin signs, so it is often under recognized. Less commonly the cornea becomes inflamed or scarred. It is a chronic condition that is managed rather than cured, with care usually shared between eye care and dermatology professionals.
