Fluorescein Angiography

DiagnosticDiagnostics

Imaging retinal blood flow with an injected dye

Overview

Fluorescein angiography is a retinal imaging test in which fluorescein dye is injected into a vein in the arm and a special camera takes rapid photographs as the dye passes through the blood vessels of the retina and choroid. It reveals leaking vessels, blocked vessels, areas without blood flow, and abnormal new vessels, making it valuable in diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, macular degeneration, and inflammatory eye disease. The dye temporarily turns skin and urine yellow. Indocyanine green angiography is a related test better suited to imaging the deeper choroidal circulation.
