Entropion and Ectropion
Eyelids that turn inward or outward
Overview
Entropion is an inward turning of the eyelid margin so the lashes rub against the eye, causing irritation, redness, and risk of corneal damage. Ectropion is an outward turning that exposes the inner lid surface, leading to dryness, irritation, and watering because tears do not drain properly. Both are most commonly age related, caused by laxity of the eyelid tissues, but can also result from scarring, facial nerve palsy, or, in the case of scarring entropion, infections such as trachoma. Both are usually corrected surgically when symptoms are significant.
