Electroretinography
Measuring the electrical response of the retina to light
Overview
Electroretinography, ERG, records the electrical signals generated by the retina in response to flashes of light, using electrodes placed on or near the eye. Full field ERG tests rod and cone function across the whole retina under dark and light adapted conditions, while pattern and multifocal ERG assess the macula and central retina. It is essential for diagnosing and characterizing inherited retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa, cone dystrophies, and congenital stationary night blindness, and for monitoring retinal toxicity from certain medications. Standards for performing it are set by the International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision.
