Corneal Topography
Mapping the shape and curvature of the cornea
Overview
Corneal topography produces a color coded map of the curvature of the cornea, much like a contour map of terrain. Placido disc systems analyze the reflection of illuminated rings on the corneal surface, while Scheimpflug and OCT based tomography systems image the front and back surfaces and thickness of the whole cornea. It is essential for detecting keratoconus, including early forms, screening candidates for refractive surgery, planning cataract surgery and toric lenses, and fitting specialty contact lenses. It also helps explain unexplained blur or astigmatism after surgery or injury.
